What We Do

Homeownership & the ReStore

Two pillars of our work in Abilene: partnering with families to build affordable homes, and turning donated goods into more homes.

Affordable homeownership

We partner with hardworking local families who need a hand up — not a handout. Families invest sweat equity into their home and the homes of their neighbors, then purchase the finished home with an affordable, no-interest mortgage.

1. Homeowner College

Every partner family begins with Homeowner College, where they learn financial literacy, home maintenance, and community engagement before mortgage pre-qualification.

2. Construction & sweat equity

After pre-qualification, construction begins. Each family contributes 250–400 hours of sweat equity alongside volunteers — building skills, friendships, and ownership.

Do you qualify?

To partner with Habitat, families must demonstrate three things:

  • A need for housing
  • Ability to pay an affordable mortgage
  • Willingness to partner with us
