Who We Are

Our Mission

Building homes, communities, and hope

Guided by faith and fueled by people like you, we bring God's love into action by building strength, stability, and self-reliance through affordable homeownership.

Our mission

Seeking to put God's love into action, Habitat for Humanity brings people together to build homes, communities, and hope.

Our vision

A world where everyone has a decent place to live.

Our principles

These guiding principles shape how we serve our community and fulfill our mission.

1

Demonstrate the love of Jesus Christ.

We put faith into action by showing God's love through our words and deeds.

2

Focus on shelter.

We build and improve homes so families have a safe, decent place to live.

3

Advocate for affordable housing.

We work to remove barriers and promote policies that support affordable housing for all.

4

Promote dignity and hope.

We treat everyone with respect and empower families to build a better future.

5

Support sustainable and transformative development.

We invest in long-term solutions that strengthen families and communities.

Rooted in faith. Built on community.

We are a Christian housing ministry that believes everyone deserves the opportunity to build a better life. Together, we build more than homes — we build hope.

Our history

International history

Founded in Americus, Georgia in 1976, Habitat for Humanity now operates globally and has helped build or repair more than one million houses, serving over four million people worldwide.

Habitat in Abilene

Established in 1990 as an affiliate of Habitat for Humanity International, we've built or rehabilitated more than 180 homes — helping 200+ adults and 400+ children into safe, affordable housing.

All are welcome

We have an open-door policy and welcome everyone regardless of race, religion, or background.

Sweat-equity partnership

Families invest hundreds of hours alongside volunteers, then purchase the finished home with an affordable mortgage that pays it forward to the next family.

Non-proselytizing

We share the love of Christ through our work — we do not require participation in any religious activity.

Frequently asked questions

What does Habitat do?+

We partner with low-to-moderate income families to build simple, decent, affordable homes — sold with affordable mortgages and down-payment assistance.

How can I get involved?+

We're largely funded by donations and powered by volunteer labor. Visit Get Involved for ways to donate, volunteer, or sponsor a home.

How is the money used?+

Contributions pay for program expenses, construction materials, and the staff needed to manage volunteer labor. New construction itself provides no revenue — homes are sold at-cost.

Are Habitat houses free?+

No. Habitat is a hand up, not a handout. Partner families purchase their home with an at-cost, affordable mortgage.

How are homeowners selected?+

Based on level of need, willingness to partner, and ability to repay an affordable mortgage.

Can I volunteer if I can't build?+

Absolutely. Roles include special events, mentoring, fundraising, office support, and providing lunches on the build site.
